I recently received the following email from a friend of mine who became aware of the dangers of sugar.

He was so motivated by this experience that he did further research and found out even more to confirm his initial concerns. I have included his email below, as I received it, in order to convey both his level of concern “for family and friends” as well as his considered approach to presenting the informaiton he found.

I wish to highlight the fact that my friend also points out – we are not medically trained, and this does not constitute medical advice. However it does constitute an urgent request that you do your own investigation and make up your own mind.

A while back I watched a documentary on sugar and I was shocked at what they were saying so I did a bit more reading to verify what I was hearing. It was shocking enough that I wanted to put some information together as I think that if the advice is heeded it will protect my family and friends. I also know that if I go on too much and I am going to sound like a religious nut so this will be my last communication on the subject. That is unless anyone does want to discuss it further then I will be happy to do so.

You are all very busy so I have summarised some of the more alarming facts, however I have included links to some of the better articles and videos that are available so that you can double check what I am saying, see links at the bottom. I am not a doctor and I don’t claim to have any medical training but everything that I say below can be verified soplease do so and go over some of the evidence. Wikipedia is a good place to start because they include references to medical papers and journals.

When doing your own research beware of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) from the sugar industry, they are trying to protect a multi billion dollar industry and there is evidence they are using the same tricks the big tobacco companies used before the class action lawsuits started.

One claim that you will hear is that sugar, glucose specifically, is needed by the body. That is true, it’s just not true that you need the sugar in the quantities and form that the sugar and food industry sells it in. All foods contain some form of sugar (there are a few different forms) but the refined sugars that are getting added to foods are toxic. With a decent diet you will be getting all the glucose (sugar) that your body needs and you don’t need any added sugar. It does absolutely nothing for you except cause illness and disease.

Top 4 killers in the western world are heart disease, cancer, strokes and Alzheimer’s all of which have been linked to excessive consumption of sugar. All of which are pretty scary but the damage that sugar does to the brain is the most frightening for me. See the links at the bottom, I have only included links from reputable websites and sources. Sugar is also linked to a host of other problems like diabetes, gout, obesity, fatty liver disease, cholesterol, impaired immune system, acne, eye problems and tooth decay. In Nigeria where sugar consumption is just 2g per day on average per person the incidence of tooth decay is 2%. In America the incidence of tooth decay is 98%. If that wasn’t enough sugar also causes premature ageing (including skin) through a process called glycation. Quote from Wikipedia on Glycation. “which lead to advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). Some AGEs are benign, but others are more reactive than the sugars they are derived from, and are implicated in many age-related chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (the endothelium, fibrinogen, and collagen are damaged), Alzheimer’s disease (amyloid proteins are side-products of the reactions progressing to AGEs), cancer (acrylamide and other side-products are released), peripheral neuropathy (the myelin is attacked), and other sensory losses such as deafness (due to demyelination). This range of diseases is the result of the very basic level at which glycations interfere with molecular and cellular functioning throughout the body and the release of highly oxidizing side-products such as hydrogen peroxide

Sugar prevents the uptake of micronutrients, calcium, vitamin A, iron, and Zinc. See this American Heart Association statement. http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/120/11/1011.full.pdf . Which might not seem significant but those micronutrients are vital to us and deficiencies in them will cause a whole host of other problems.

In order to get the excess sugar out of your body it produces insulin. Insulin signals the body to store the excess glucose from the sugar as fat to get it out of the blood stream, this is called Glycolysis. However when you don’t have the glucose the body goes into Ketosis. Wikipedia article on Ketosis, “In glycolysis higher levels of insulin promote storage of body fat and block release of fat from adipose tissues, while in ketosis fat reserves are readily released and consumed. For this reason ketosis is sometimes referred to as the body’s “fat burning” mode. “. So if you want to burn the fat and cut the cholesterol just stop eating sugar.

Sugar is highly addictive, activating the same part of the brain as any addiction does, the nucleus accumbens. If you think it is not an addiction try going a couple of weeks without it and your body will scream for it which is a classic sign of addiction.

So how much sugar is too much? You will hear a lot of different guidelines and a lot of them are so difficult to follow. You have doctors on one side saying one pastry a month is too much to the World Health Organisation saying no more than 10% of your calories should come from sugar. Which is idiotic because the majority of people are not going to have an idea what that is. To put that into perspective though, if you had one can of regular coke it would exceed your WHO daily allowance. The American Heart Association says no more than 5% of your calories from sugar. I choose to cut sugar out completely because I have no idea how much is bad for me I just know it is and given how addictive it is I don’t want to put myself in turmoil of having to always second guess my consumption.
